Clayton Maue

Clayton Harold Maue “Bootlegger” born May 21, 1956, left this world on September 15, 2014. He was a self-admitted hug-aholic who always brightened a room or a moment with his presence. He will be remembered for the many people whose lives he enriched.Clayton was a loving son, brother, husband, father and “Papa” who will be forever missed. He was always proudest and happiest when he was surrounded by family, or by friends that he had co-opted into his family. 37 years ago, Father Fred united Clay and Jeanne Spears in marriage. Father Fred did a good job, as Clay and Jeanne celebrated their 37th anniversary last January. Clay enjoyed putting family first, as his sons Jon and Luke and their wives Tara (Hackett) and Holly (Parsons), grandson's Jacob and Lennon, and granddaughter Stella would tell you of his love for them. A 1974 graduate of Traverse City St. Francis High School, Clay enjoyed his group of diverse friends and their friends. Clay enjoyed the presence of others and enjoyed the time he spent with them. Clayton leaves behind many friends who will miss his laughter, and story telling ability. Clayton never forgot the lesson of Father Fred to tell those around him that he loved them. He didn’t just tell his family/friends goodbye, he hugged them goodbye.Clayton was an avid outdoorsman and skilled slayer of whitetail deer. He was full of great stories that came from a lifetime of hunting, fishing, and trapping accomplishments. Clay had Master Angler awards, Boone and Crockett awards, but he was most proud of the hunting mornings he shared with his two sons. Clay had a knack for tracking deer, was nicknamed “the dog” and one cold morning in November, stripped down to his birthday suit and forded the Manistee River in pursuit of game.Clayton was a skilled photographer who took many senior portraits and weddings. He was also a skilled craftsman who recently sold his first eagle carved out of a moose antler. He had the ability to see the beauty in what others might only see as “nature stuff”.Clayton gave generously of his time, including coaching hundreds of boys and girls in baseball in Blair Township. Additionally Clayton was also a hunter safety instructor, sharing the gift of hunting with a generation of new hunters.Clayton leaves behind a loving family and a multitude of great memories. His presence of body has been replaced by his sense of spirit, and the love he left behind will live on. As his final act of love, he helped others with the help of the Gift of Life program.A mass will be held at St. Mary's of Hannah Church on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 10 am. It will be followed with a Celebration of Life, to be held at Joe and Sheryl Elliott’s cabin on his beloved Boardman River.He was preceded in death by his Father, John (“Jack”) Louis Maue, and mother, Jane (Davis) Maue. He is survived by his wife Jeanne, sons Jon (Tara) and Luke (Holly), grandsons Jacob and Lennon, and granddaughter Stella, brothers Scott (Barb), Amous (Mary), sisters Patty (Jerry Robertson) and Jinny (Craig O’Connor), the Spears family, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.His family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Maue Family Fund at East Traverse Catholic Federal Credit Union on Veteran’s Drive.Clay’s family also would like to tell you all: LOVE FIERCELY!Condolences may be left online at www.wolfeoneill.com.Arrangements were made by Wolfe-O'Neill Funeral Home, our family serving yours.
