July 10, 1940 - March 19, 2022
Warren Dennis Bushey (Denny), 81, of Leelanau County, Michigan, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 19th, surrounded by his family. Denny was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 10th, 1940. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 57 years, Betty K. Bushey; his children, Michael (Wendy) Bushey, Sara (Cristi) Bushey-Reyes and Scott (Josh) Bushey; his grandchildren, Morrigan (Mars), Leah, Noah, Lauren and Grace; his sister Sheila Bushey, brothers Walter Hyvari and Terry Hyvari and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding him in death were his father Warren Francis Bushey, his mother Mary Jane Sullivan Hyvari and his sisters Kay Bushey and Gayle Hyvari; infant son and infant daughter, Linda Michelle Bushey. Denny attended Northern Michigan University where he met his beloved wife during a pinochle game. He married Betty on January 23rd, 1965. They moved to Marquette Michigan, Rock Island Illinois, and then to Decatur, Illinois for many years where he made many lifelong friends. Denny was a proud native Michigander and after raising his family in Illinois, moved back permanently to the place he loved, Leelanau County, where he built his dream home. He loved the beauty of Leelanau and was frequently found outside putzing around with his flowers and trees or sitting on the deck drinking a bloody Mary and reading his newspapers. He loved to take his family to the beach and often could be found swimming, kayaking, or sitting under a tree reading his book, always appreciating the beauty of his surroundings. Denny was full of love and passion. He wanted the best for those he loved and for his country. He was a member of the Leelanau County Democratic Party, the League of Women Voters Leelanau County, and the Grand Traverse Humanists. He fought for the underdog, the marginalized and the oppressed. He fought with his words by writing letters to the editor and with his actions by marching and protesting for what he knew was right and just. He lived a life of authenticity, truth, integrity and love. He never knew a stranger. Denny was a romantic, bringing flowers to his wife almost every week. He also had a wicked and hilarious sense of humor and loved to get a reaction. He was intelligent and generous and feisty. He was a bright light in this world and was truly loved. He will be missed by many. A celebration of life will be on Sunday, July 10, 2022, from 2:00-5:00 PM at the Leland Library Munnecke Room. 203 E. Cedar Street, Leland MI 49654.
