Lorraine Kathleen Balazovic Fix (Kathy) passed away June 8, 2025 in Kalkaska, Michigan at the age of 81. Born June 3, 1944 in Quantico, Virginia to Katherine Lorraine and Julius Joseph Balazovic, Kathy grew up in Wyandotte, Michigan with her younger brother Albert. She attended Marygrove College for her bachelor’s degree and Oakland University where she earned her master’s degree in special education. She married Leo Fix on July 9, 1966 in Rochester, Michigan. Kathy and Leo first lived in Troy, Michigan then moved to Herndon, Virginia, returning to Michigan when Leo retired. Kathy spent more than 30 years teaching special education in the public schools of Loudoun County, Virginia and Kalkaska County, Michigan while raising her three children, Julie, Becky, and David. Upon retirement from teaching, she spent several years selling real estate in the Traverse City region through Coldwell Banker. A valued member of her community, Kathy volunteered her time as a Girl Scout leader, in her children’s schools, and more recently on the Board of Kalkaska Library and with the Coast Guard Auxiliary where she was active both on the water and as an instructor in the classroom. She had a beautiful tenor voice and was a member of several local choirs, including the community choir in Elk Rapids and the church choirs of Christ the King and St. Mary of the Woods. Kathy was an avid reader and tried to complete the New York Times Wordle game in two tries or fewer. She loved the outdoors and cared deeply about the waters and ecology of northern Michigan. She was intelligent and organized, an amazing wife and mother, and a wonderful friend. She will be missed by the Coast Guard Auxiliary, by the members of her choir and church community, and by her friends at the Cardiac Rehab Workout at Kalkaska Hospital she attended with her husband. Kathy was preceded in death by her daughter Becky Fix and leaves behind a devoted and loving family: her remaining children Julie Fix Udani and David Fix, her son-in-law Sanjay Udani, her husband of almost 59 years Leo Fix, her brother Albert Balazovic, and her two grandchildren Tara and Kiran Udani. She will be missed. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Kathy’s name to the Father Fred Foundation. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church, Kalkaska at 12:30 p.m. visitation beginning at 11:30 a.m. at church. Inurnment will be in held in Evergreen Cemetery.
